Work and Career

Decision Making

Must I leave my current company to improve my working environment?

How can I be marketable for a new job without going back to school?

How do I make sure that my next "dream" job doesn't turn out like the last one?

How do I get started when I don't even know what I truly want to do?

Must I leave my current company to improve my working environment?

When you fully understand what value your skills have to an employer and where you want to focus your efforts, you look for needs in your current organization that are a match. Your understanding of yourself greatly improves your perspective and insight – you see and create opportunities that you may never have envisioned before experiencing Life\Work Design.

  • How well do you articulate your skills, talents and personality traits as related to your work today?

  • What do you dream about doing that is within your capacity to address?

  • Do you fully appreciate the possibilities of meaningful and satisfying work with your current employer?

How can I be marketable for a new job without going back to school?

When you define “who you are” and “where you genuinely want to go in your work life,” you will discover that getting there is not necessarily a matter of getting more formal education.  It is probable you already possess the skills you most want to use; it is a matter of learning to talk about them in a way that is compelling.

  • Life\Work Design involves a “different way of thinking.” Do you ask yourself “why?” when you think about going back to school to get that additional degree?  If your answer is only to “get a better job” or “to improve myself,” you need to look again.

  • Do you have a plan for your future – a real plan?

  • One key outcome of the Crystal-Barkley Life\Work Design process is your creation of a personal, comprehensive and practical plan for work, learning and leisure.

back to questions

How do I make sure that my next “dream” job doesn’t turn out like the last one?

“If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten.”  Traditionally when we look for a “job,” what are
we looking for?  We are generally looking for better pay, maybe better working conditions and the ability to “fit in” as best we can.

No wonder the honeymoon phase of many jobs is so short!

  • Through the Life\Work Design process, you will evaluate existing information on yourself, your work, its products and practices along with gathering a great deal of information about your values, beliefs and interests

  • You will learn how to capture relevant information about your own and other organizations, professions, work environments or whatever interests you

  • You will match the skills and interests you most desire to use with a potential boss (or client) who most needs and values them.

As a result, you will make your greatest contribution to yourself and to the organization you choose.

back to questions

How do I get started when I don’t even know what I truly want to do?

Often people in the “job search” mode don’t even think to ask this question.  We tend to forget to build the foundation of our search: the authentic knowledge of “who we are” merged with “what we truly want to do” – before we head off to find out how we might fit into a “job.”

  • Have you ever heard anyone say, “I’m flexible and can do a lot of things.  It doesn’t matter what I do; I’ll go for whatever job
means the most money or ________ (you fill in the blank)

  • What is the chance you will really enjoy this job?  Will you be excited about what you do and thereby have much greater potential
to be your best?  Is it really about money?  Does it fit with your values and interests?  Do you get to use your preferred skills?

  • Life\Work Design will guide you in fully articulating your skills, interests, and values and in developing your rich and authentic personal plan of action. This is your foundation for achieving the work you desire which will be integrated more fully with the
other important aspects of your life
